Strange that, in comparing the societies, the fact that the vast majority of the Spartan population were from a slave class, enabling all that military goings on among the citizens, seems to have been missed.  ??? Not that the Athenians didn't use slaves in the silver mines - not a long term career.

Surprised you've not considered it.  If you wander through those museums of collected historic buildings, don't you think "I wonder how they decided what the interiors looked like?".

Anyway, there are some great images there.  Obviously, some peasants weren't big on underwear - I hope the logs don't spit. :o

That is only accurate if you accept a single line of battle.

It's only one interpretation, and it is not supported by the presence of units and formations, or pretty much any modern research.

Here is a short bio of Esposito. Gabriele Esposito is a contract professor of Medieval, Modern and Contemporary History at the "Luigi Vanvitelli" University of Campania. He also writes military history. I guess he used Connolly's book as a reference point, not checking deeper...

It is a really interesting narrative about what is and is not known about the library in Alexandria in Ptolemaic times and its impact on later libraries in Roman world.
