A paper on Ambrosius Arturus

This study considers the possibility of a misreading of the name 'Ambrosius Aurelianus' as 'Ambrosius Arturus', and so suggests that the Roman Ambrosius and the British Arthur are the same character.

I must admit that on reading it, I was left wondering whether the one or two visits of St Germanus of Auxerre were the occasions when Gildas says the Romans sent help

After all Germanus had apparently been a Dux, which hints at military experience, and perhaps a good person to train and lead a local force, perhaps with a small bodyguard of his own to stiffen them

true, although we know that Gildas mixed up his recent (pre birth) history and overall Gildas is sermonising not writing a history which means we are reliant on uncorroborated 'facts' for the most part
