I'm guessing the photo is a modern recreation rather than the actual sample.

I think it's one of the originals:

So they really are original.

I seem to recall that the sea shells which the purple dye comes from were found in significant quantities around/near the Arsuf castle remains (built on previously occupied site, back to Phoenician).
