Hmmmm, a brave claim.  Even if one ignores Pithecusae as an entrepot rather than a colony, Cumae usually gets the claim to be the first in Magna Graecia  :)

The article specifically says that the Greeks of Italian Cumae founded Parthenope, which suggests that the sub responsible for the headline hadn't actually read the article.

I was once told to provide more copy than needed. If you provide more, subeditors merely cut it down. Provide too little, subeditors have to invent stuff to fill the space  :-[
