“When Hasdrubal, who was aroused by the shouts of the horsemen, sprang out of his tent and saw the uproar outside his earthwork and the excitement among his men, and in the distance the gleaming standards of the legions and the plain filled with the enemy, he forthwith sent out all his cavalry against the horsemen. As for himself, he marched out of the camp with the infantry column, and in drawing up his line made no change from the customary order…”

The membership subscription has remained at the current level of £27.00 for 6 issues since 2016.
We have been fortunate in that printing costs remained unchanged for a long time and commercial postage costs were relatively stable. However, from 2021 printing costs have increased substantially and we are now in a position where membership subscription fees do not cover the cost of producing Slingshot.
The Committee has therefore decided that, regrettably, from 1st January 2024 that the subscription fee for 6 issues should increase from £27.00 to £36.00. We recognise that this is a substantial increase of 33%, but in the period since the last subscription increase the retail price index has increased by 38%.
We appreciated that any increase to the cost of membership could be burdensome to some members. Therefore, the Society is making a special offer to any existing members to extend their subscription for a further 6 issues at the existing subscription fee of £27. This offer will expire on 31st December 2023. To take advantage of it, either use the JOIN page on Society website or send the Treasurer a £27 cheque payable to “The Society of Ancients”.
Committee members volunteer their time without payment to promote the Society’s aims regarding ancient and medieval history and wargaming. The Society has published Slingshot continuously since Issue 1 was sent out in September 1966. One of the best ways of keeping the Society subscription fee down is to promote the Society or to volunteer. Further details may be found on the Forum.
If any member would like to see the Society accounts or get a more detailed understanding of the Society financial position, please contact the Treasurer.
